Creating or modifying a complex table correctly using solely SQL can be tricky, but SQL Server Management Studio’s Table Designer feature has make it very easy. But sometimes when you try to redesign or modify a table, you may see an error saying “This backend version is not supported to design database diagrams or tables”.
This error occurs in Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio when you right click at a table or diagram and select ‘Design’.
This error occurs if version of SQL Server you are connected to is newer than the version of SQL Server Management Studio. For instance, you can not modify a table using ‘Design’ feature if SQL Server’s version is 2012 and Management Studio’s version is 2008. You must use similar or newer version of Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio.
However, you can use SQL ‘ALTER’ queries to modify tables even if version of SQL Server is newer.
